A duel is a type of formal combat, as it was practiced from the fifteenth to the twentieth century in Western societies. It can be defined as a consensual fight between the two men, who use deadly weapons in accordance with explicit or implicit rules that are respected by the honor of the participants, joined by sponsors, who can in turn fight each other or not . In general, and particularly in recent decades, bereavement is considered an illegal act in most countries.
The duel was carried out by the will of one of the parties - the challenger - to wash an insult to his honor. The goal was not usually to kill the opponent, but to achieve "satisfaction", for example by restoring honor by putting life on the line to defend it.
Duels should be distinguished from combat trials because the former were not used to determine guilt or innocence, nor were they official proceedings. Duels, on the contrary, were generally illegal, although in most societies where he was habitual, he counted on social acceptance.
Participants in a properly raised duel were generally not prosecuted, and in cases where they were, they were not imprisoned for that reason. It was considered that only knights had an honor to defend, and therefore the upper social class was the one who qualified to do so: if a gentleman was insulted by someone from the lower class, he did not challenge him but inflicted a physical punishment or commanded his servants to do so.
