The German M24 hand grenade, also known as the "Stielhandgranate," is one of the most iconic hand grenades used by the German military during World War I and World War II.
Wooden Handle : The M24 is characterized by its long wooden handle, which made it easier to throw. The handle allowed for a better grip and a greater throwing range compared to conventional grenades.
Explosive body : The head of the grenade, which contained the explosive, was made of metal and attached to one end of the handle.
Detonation Mechanism : At the end of the handle was a cap that, when unscrewed, revealed a string with a ceramic or metal bead at its end. Pulling this string activated the ignition mechanism, which then ignited the grenade's detonator with a delay of a few seconds.
Safety : A screw-on metal cap on the head of the grenade protected the detonator until it was ready for use.
The M24 became a symbol of the German army during world conflicts due to its distinctive design. Its design would also influence later grenades. Although technologically simpler compared to some contemporary grenades, its ease of use and effectiveness made it a feared weapon on the battlefield.
